Join the AutoFair project to develop trustworthy and transparent AI algorithms.

In order to deliver AI systems with full consideration of social welfare, we are developing training algorithms that incorporate appropriate measures of aspects of social concern. We seek to develop training optimization algorithms with theoretical guarantees of solution quality, which also work well in practice.

There is a PhD studentship available in related topics, to be supervised by Jakub Marecek and Vyacheslav Kungurtsev (Dept. of Computer Science) at the Czech Technical University, in close collaboration with the teams of Shie Mannor (Technion), Robert Shorten (Imperial), Dimitris Gunopulos (NKUA), and Ioannis Emiris (Athena RC), working together on Horizon Europe project AutoFair, funded by the European Commission (EC). The project is a part of an EC initiative towards ensuring AI development that is trustworthy and transparent.

Jakub Mareček, Head of the optimization research group at AIC FEE CTU, joined our center after a successful research career in the industry.

Candidates

We seek candidates with a Masters degrees in Computer Science, Mathematics, Operations Research or related disciplines, with excellent mathematical aptitude, as demonstrated by involvement in mathematical olympiads, relevant coursework, or undergraduate research. A preference is given to:

  • candidates with experience with non-trivial analysis of (optimization) algorithms,
  • candidates with experience with deep learning,
  • candidates with experience in programming in Python.

Salary

The position is full time and limited to 3 years, but can be extended in case of mutual interest. The studentship comes with a monthly salary adjusted to match the average salary in Prague, the Czech Republic (which currently stands at approximately EUR 23 000 p.a. before a notably low tax), and a travel budget.

Perks of being a Ph.D. student in AIC

Our offices are centrally-located with a view of Prague Castle. Perfect transport accessibility is an obvious advantage. This area provides for a rich cultural and culinary life with many cozy pubs to network with your peers and colleagues (FYI, the average price of beer in Prague is EUR 1,6. Cheers to that!).

Offsites, BBQs, seminars, pubs – there are plenty of opportunities for networking and making new friends in AIC.

Apart from your 6 weeks of paid vacation, you can get excited for traveling to attractive conferences abroad, regular internal seminars, social events and unlimited supply of coffee (very appreciated).

However, what we appreciate the most about our research center is an inspirational and supportive environment. Plus you will have the convenience of working in teams where everyone knows their agenda and the supervisor is at your fingertips to help. With that said, getting your PhD in AI Center FEE CTU will be a forming life experience that will kick off your research career!
