A new initiative formed at the Department of Computer Science aims to advance ethical and explainable AI through interdisciplinary research and dialogue. It welcomes new members interested in connecting technical innovation with fairness, safety, and societal responsibility.
Responsible AI in Prague (RAI) is a community of researchers, students, and enthusiasts dedicated to studying the ethical dimensions of artificial intelligence. The core team behind this initiative comprises AIC's Ph.D. student Jiří Němeček together with colleagues from the Intelligent Data Analysis research group: Gustav Šír, Martin Krutský and Jakub Peleška, and originally also Lucie Stewart (currently at Technology Centre Prague). In our academic research, we mainly specialize in Explainable AI, Neurosymbolic AI, Integer Optimization, and Deep Learning.

The RAI's mission is to bridge the gap between technical development, ethical norms, and regulation by making fairness and safety integral to AI innovation. Interdisciplinary discussion is a key to advancing the ideas of responsible AI, and as such, we organize seminars and targeted educational talks. We are also conducting research in collaboration with CETE-P, evaluating Explainable AI (XAI) through regulatory, philosophical, and technological lenses. Public Outreach
The key activity of our group is to meet with like-minded people to discuss the ethical dimensions of AI. We host seminars in our department and also participate in numerous public events. What have we done so far?
As part of AI Days, we have organized lectures for both high school students and the general public for three consecutive years. In 2023, we began by mapping the landscape of Responsible AI projects in Czechia. In 2024, we presented the critical ethical decisions awaiting AI researchers. Most recently, at AI Days 2025, we focused on bias in AI and addressing unfair automated decisions. During the FEE CTU Open Days, we also demonstrated the principles of explainable AI using examples of cheating detection (automatic proctoring) in exams.

We have hosted seminars featuring experts from other fields, such as philosopher John Dorsch, who has covered topics including polarization algorithms and AI trustworthiness. Paula Gürtler, a PhD candidate in Applied Ethics, has discussed the inner workings of the EU legislative process, as well as details of the upcoming AI Act. We also organised discussion events on targeted topics, such as with Vojtěch Kovařík on his position paper on AI testing and the situational awareness of the models.
Interdisciplinary Research
Since the topic of responsible and ethical AI often extends beyond our technological expertise, we actively seek collaboration with experts from the humanities and social sciences. We work closely with the Centre for Environmental and Technology Ethics (CETE-P), namely with philosophers John Dorsch and Paula Gürtler. We also connect our activities with the prg.ai organization, regularly speaking at their events.

We have presented our research on AI explainability evaluation and governance at several international events, including the Workshop on Ethical Artificial Intelligence (at ACM SIGKDD ‘25) in Toronto, the International Conference on Large-Scale AI Risks in Leuven, and the European Workshop on Trustworthy AI (at ECAI ‘25) in Bologna.
What’s Next?
Our current goal is to finalize our Explainable AI assessment framework, viewed through the lens of EU regulation. We aim to continue developing the topics of AI explainability and trustworthiness, translating theoretical concepts into practice to ensure they don't remain mere hype. We will also continue to build and give back to the community through public events, discussions, and educational talks.
Join us!
We are based in Prague at the Department of Computer Science, Faculty of Electrical Engineering, CTU, where we also host our weekly meetings and occasional seminars. Although our current core team has a technical background, we aim to bring together people from various fields and with various experiences, with the goal of supporting responsible AI development that benefits society and minimizes risks. Are you interested in the responsible development of technology? We welcome anyone, whether you are a student, researcher, industry professional, or simply an enthusiast.
